Editorial

There is a lot packed into this newsletter, as well as all the other items mailed to you with it.

If you want to know what each coloured sheet is all about, see below.

And if you are confused with the new tag legislation, I have tried to bring some clarity to it on page 7.

Your new Council met in October and we had a stimulating meeting with new Chairman Dyfed Rowlands in charge.

Lots of new ideas were put forward and this newsletter tells you all about them - a Ram of the Year Competition, an Introductory Members scheme and a postal ballot for next year's Council vacancies, to name but a few.

So, I hope you enjoy the newsletter but most of all I hope you have a very Happy Christmas and may I wish you all the very best for the New Year.

Annual returns

Enclosed with this newsletter are several different forms which I need you to return by Friday 8th January - but actually sooner the better.

Depending on your activity during the year, you will have received some or all of these:

Blue - your annual flock return. Please fill in the gaps or amend the information I have filled in for you already.

Please note that there are two sides to fill in. You must also send your membership subscription (£30). We do not have any Standing Orders so everyone needs to pay by cheque.

This is also your chance to buy your 100 Club stake/s for 2010 and book your adverts in the Flock Book and on our website.

Pink - your flock survey. This gives you the chance to tell me what males have been sold, have died or have been slaughtered during the course of the year.

You will only receive one of these if you have been ‘active' during the year i.e. registered a ram.

Green - your chance to vote for your top 10 judges to go on to the judging list for the Major Shows.

Cream - this form is for allowing your contact details to appear on our "find a member" part of the BWM website. It allows you to decide what information appears. You will only receive this form if you haven't returned one yet.

The sooner the returns are back the sooner we can have the 2010 Flock Book ready for you!

Chris Hughes Memorial Trophy

The second Chris Hughes Memorial Trophy for the best Stockperson has been awarded.

The Trophy is for good stockmanship and general enthusiasm for the breed, demonstrated at any of the shows and sales throughout the year up to our own annual BWM Show & Sale in the autumn.

Any Association member can nominate a young person and the October Council meeting discuss the nominations based on the facts laid out by the nominator.

In this case it was one of our newer members, Andrew Rowe, who nominated the eventual winner, Hywel Bowden. Andrew says this of Hywel:

"In the three or four years we have known him, Hywel has always demonstrated an enthusiastic interest and pride in his sheep and his connection with the Association.

He has played a key part in the numerous showing successes of the Bowden family's flock over the years and has also been a source of advice and support to us as new members of the Association.

Hywel's support, help and advice has inspired us to start preparations for showing our own sheep.

Our first attempt was at Llandovery Show & Sale where we missed out on a rosette by one place.

Encouraged and taught by his parents, Hywel demonstrates a clear understanding of the breed and the qualities to look and strive for.

I believe such young enthusiasm and dedication deserves recognition and encouragement.

For all the reasons above I have no hesitation in nominating Hywel for the Chris Hughes Memorial Trophy."

Many congratulations to Hywel who is certainly a credit to the breed.

The presentation took place at this year's Welsh Winter Fair.

Look out for the form for next year's competition which will be circulated with the Spring Newsletter.

Flock Competition 2009

2009 saw the fourth BWM Flock Competition take place.

This year's event was staged in the South of England and the East Midlands and Eastern Counties - a large area!

Immediate Past President Patricia Laws was the judge and, escorted by husband Charlie, they covered over 750 miles in their car.

Here is what Trish had to say after completing her trip:

"It took three and a half days and I loved every minute of it - renewing old acquaintances and meeting lots of new fellow BWM flock owners.

Also one truly amazing young sheepdog who I was tempted to smuggle into our car!.

Everywhere we went the welcome and hospitality was fantastic. We started in the New Forest and ended up in Leicestershire taking in Brighton, Andover, Basingstoke, Bracknell, Sevenage, Newmarket and Halesworth.

These very versatile black sheep seem to thrive whatever the terrain or regime.

My overall impression of the quality of the sheep, taking in breed points and conformation, was good.

The only negative point would perhaps be that I did see a little more grey wool and kemp than I would like in some.

The subject brought to my attention again and again was the difficulty of obtaining new rams/bloodlines in the east of England.

I came to the conclusion that if I had gone with a trailer full of shearling rams from breeders in the west I would have sold the lot!"

(Perhaps breeders in the west would like to note this and consider such a trip?? - Ed)

A Ram of the Year Trophy

A new initiative from Council will be introduced in 2010 - a Ram of the Year trophy. It will take the following form.

A points card, for a specific named ram which must be a shearling or older, will be provided to members who apply to the Secretary in the New Year.

All the approved shows, listed in the table below under "Show Dates for Next Year", will qualify with the proviso that the show has selected an approved judge in 2010 (sometimes, very much against the Association's wishes shows do not choose a judge from our BWM approved judges list).

The points will be awarded as follows: 1st - 3, 2nd - 2, 3rd - 1 for all approved shows except the Royal Welsh where the points will be 1st - 5, 2nd - 4, 3rd - 3.

There will not be any additional points for breed champions.

The member will be responsible for filling in the points card and obtaining the judges' signatures and for sending the card/s to the Secretary by the closing date, which will be sometime after the date of the last qualifying show.

There will be no restriction on the number of rams entered, but each one will require its own card.

So, if you would like to enter this competition, contact me anytime after the New Year with the name and UK number of the ram you wish to enter in the competition in its inaugural year.

Hayston Trophy 2010

From next year the competition will be slightly different.

The Royal Welsh and the Smallholders Show (both at Builth Wells) will be included every year and there will be four other shows chosen from the Council's list of approved shows which may be regional shows or may be one day shows and they will change each year.

Criteria for the selection of the four ‘other' shows are (in no particular order):

  • That two can be said to be north of Builth Wells
  • That two can be said to be south of Builth Wells
  • That, where possible, shows are chosen which have not been chosen for quite a while (for either the Hayston, or its predecessor, the Harrop)
  • That dates very close to each other between the six shows are avoided if possible

Well, that's not too much of a challenge is it!

It was not easy to make the selection this year, particularly given that one of the shows we were going to choose has now folded, but here are the shows this year, and I apologise for the closeness in dates for some of them:

Welsh Winter Fair

There were 13 entries in our class at the 2009 Royal Welsh Winter Fair which took place on 30th November & 1st December. The results were:

One pair of Black Welsh Mountain lambs
1stDyfed & Rowenna Rowlands
2ndMr E O Williams
3rdMr E O Williams

In addition, Mair James won the carcase competition with a purebred Black Welsh Mountain in the "Lamb - any pure native mountain or hill breed".

Congratulations to you all.

Native Breed Show

For the last 2 years the RBST have organised a native breed show at the RABDF's Dairy & Livestock Event, which is held at Stoneleigh every September.

The show has quickly turned into a great success and is now regarded as a key event in the Trust's diary.

The event is designed to promote to the industry the qualities and abilities of native and rare breeds.

So it is with great pride I can inform you that Mr & Mrs Goode, our enthusiastic members from near Rugby, won the Female Champion with their ewe, Reserve Female with their ewe lambs and went on to win the overall Reserve National Champion with their ewe.

The photo (opposite) shows Peter Goode with Tim Brigstocke (RBST CEO) and, I assume, the judge.

Many congratulations!

Show dates next year

Here are the dates and contacts for the approved Shows with BWM classes in 2010.

All these shows should use Association approved judges and will receive an Association rosette to award to their BWM champions.

I have not verified all the dates so do please check with the Show Secretaries listed to double check.

Unfortunately, three shows closed after their 2009 events, the Royal, the Shropshire and West Midlands and the Carmarthenshire.

Here is a news report from the Daily Post on the sad demise of the Shropshire & West Midlands:

"Popular show falls victim to recession"

A Meeting will be held next month for creditors of the doomed Shropshire and West Midlands Show.

The Shrewsbury event, which has been running since 1875, is being placed into voluntary liquidation.

It had been losing money for the last decade and it is believed the show owes more than £160,000 to about 50 creditors.

Over the weekend members received letters explaining that the Shropshire and West Midlands Agricultural Society, the registered charity behind the event, could no longer continue trading.

On November 4, the show trustees voted to bring in an insolvency specialist and cancelled a Charles Darwin fireworks spectacular on November 7, blaming lack of funds.

Now members' and creditors' meetings are being held on December 10 at Birmingham Chamber of Commerce.

The Society blamed its financial problems on the recession, claiming it needed at least £50,000 to help it through the slow winter months.

A notice on its website said simply: "We are very sorry."

The first West Mid Show was held in The Quarry, Shrewsbury, on May 29-30, 1875, and for many years it moved to sites such as Wrexham and Welshpool.

It was held first at its present riverside site in 1897 and until its demise, regularly attracted more than 50,000 people.

The showground is leased to the agricultural society by the Berwick Estate and its agents, Balfours, are now looking for new tenants.

Council Matters

Your Council, smiling because it is nearly lunchtime!

The new Council met for the first time in October and came up with quite a few new ideas. Some have already been discussed within this newsletter, but here are some others:

Introductory membership scheme

How many times have you sold a ram to a non-member, wanted to encourage them to become a member but not known how to go about it?

Well, the Association are going to trial a scheme which will help.

Called an Introductory Membership, when you sell a ram to a member you can provide me (Lesley) with their name and address (and any other contact details you may have) send in £10 and I will make the person an Introductory Member for the rest of that calendar year.

For this they will receive all the mailings Full Members receive, including that year's Flock Book and hopefully, they will soon decide that their membership is valuable and when the following January arrives they will choose to become a Full Member.

The only thing an Introductory Member will not be able to do is to register rams.

If they wish to do this they will have to ‘up-grade' their membership, fill in the normal membership application form, and pay the balance of £20 (full membership is, of course, £30 a year).

So please make use of this new scheme and help build up the Association's Membership (currently running at 245 by the way).

Postal votes for council members

Your Council is very aware of the fact that relatively few people attend our AGMs, over and above the Council members who are there already.

This results in the Council being largely appointed by the Council! In an attempt to broaden the electorate your Council wish to try a postal vote scheme in 2010.

So, Council Nomination forms will be sent out as usual sometime around March with a closing date as usual.

After the closing date the Secretary will prepare a voting paper showing all the nominees and this will also be sent out to all members, possibly with the AGM papers, for completion and return by a particular day shortly before the AGM itself.

The Secretary will then be able to count these prior to the meeting and the new Council Members announced at the AGM.

So, look out for the nomination form, and then the election form, and help to make this trial a success if you wish to be better able to make use of your vote.

Open Day 2010

Lyn Cockerill agreed to host an event next year at her home near Wincanton in Somerset. More details will appear in a future newsletter.

Year letter

Next year's year letter will be "M". Michael, Maurice, Maelgwyn, Marmaduke - ooh, I can think of lots of M's. Go on, surprise me with some fun ones, please!

I think my favourites in 2009 were Love Machine and Lamb Producer (both Mr Moyle's, flock 777) and Lothario (Susan Clyde, flock 1083) although I did rather like Legacy (Chris Garn, flock 960) too, after all I suppose that's what we are all after!

Photos

At the Council Meeting, Flock Book Editor Gareth Davies put in a plea for photos for the 2010 Flock Book.

So if you have anything suitable please email them to Gareth Davies at gdav@hotmail.co.uk or to me at lesley.lewin@blackwelshmountain.org.uk.

100 Club Draw

As usual, this took place at the end of the Council Meeting.

The winners were as follows:

1stNeville Pugh£36
2ndJ M Griffiths£24
3rdJohn Harrop£12

Congratulations to them. Please remember to order your 2010 100 Club stakes on the back of your Annual Flock Return.

They only cost £5 a stake and you have six chances of winning a year (i.e. two draws and three prizes each time).

50% of the receipts are given away in prizes and the other 50% helps to keep the Association running.

Sheep EID - the facts

What has to be tagged?

From 31 December this year all lambs/sheep:

  • If kept for breeding or if over 12 months of age must have two tags, one of which must be electronic
  • Which are intended for slaughter by 12 months of age must have (at least) one tag which may or may not be electronic

The tags

The electronic tag has to be an approved official EID device. Approved official EID tags can be found on the RPA website (www.rpa.gov.uk) but as I write this there are only three approved.

These are a Shearwell tag (Tel: 01643 841611), a Quicktag (Tel: 028 20768696) and a Dalton tag (Tel: 0800 838 882).

However, more are in the approval process and are coming on stream all the time so by the time you look at the site others may well be on there.

Or just ring your usual manufacturer/supplier and ask them what they are offering as APPROVED, OFFICIAL EID tags.

The Colours

EID tags will always be yellow. Red is reserved for replacement tags for animals not on their holding of birth, including replacement EID tags.

Black can only be used for the ear tag where a ruminal bolus EID is present (including when a replacement bolus is applied).

So, yellow, red and black cannot be used as a colour for any other tags, including the conventional tag in a tag pair.

What's on them?

For breeding animals the number will appear very much like it currently does except that, for some reason, your UK 6 digit number will be preceded by a zero.

So it will have UK 0 123456 followed by the individual animal number (5 digits) e.g UK 0 123456 00001.

The same number will also be programmed into the electronic device except that ‘UK' will appear as ‘826', the internationally recognised code for the UK.

Management information may be included on the conventional tag but it must not interfere with the statutory information.

Slaughter animals need not have individual numbers and can just carry the flock number on the red, non-electronic tag or the yellow electronic tag (although if an electronic tag is used for a slaughter animal, there will be an individual number allocated to it and programmed into the tag).

Sheep tag numbers will now be allocated by ETAS (Ear Tag Allocation System), a system which has been in operation for cattle for around a decade so will be familiar already to many of you. Your ear tag manufacturer books your tags for you on ETAS.

Replacement tags

Now for the complicated bit!

  • Double tagged animals still on holding of birth: a like-for-like replacement may be purchased and used or the remaining tag may be removed and a whole new set of UK tags applied, cross referencing in the holding register (and letting me know if it is a registered ram!)
  • Double tagged animals no longer on the holding of birth: either apply a like-for-like replacement or apply a new set of red replacement tags, cross referencing again, as above.
  • Animals with a slaughter tag still on the holding of birth: replace with a slaughter tag or an electronic batch tag and record replacement in the holding register.
  • Animals with a slaughter tag no longer on the holding of birth: replace with a red slaughter tag or red electronic slaughter tag and record the old UK flock number (if known) and the replacement UK flock number in the holding register.

So, I hope this summary has helped a little.

I know there has been a lot in the press lately about the price you can expect to pay for the new electronic tag.

Just let me say the 50p cost of the microchip to the tag manufacturers is an educated guess, not necessarily a fact.

It doesn't take much to realise, for example, that the smaller manufacturers may not have the buying clout of the larger ones and it would be a shame to lose some manufacturers altogether on the basis of their size.

And of course there are other costs to the manufacturer in addition to the basic microchip cost.

Existing tags may not suit the inclusion of the microchip so new products may well have to be developed.

Every official approved tag has had to go through a rigorous set of tests (PAS testing) and ISO testing is likely to be brought in in the new year and all of these present the manufacturers with a new set of costs so please bear all this in mind when making your purchasing decisions.

No doubt there will be more on this subject in future BWM newsletters so, watch this space!
