Editorial

Just to let you know that this year's Flock Competition in the regions of mid and north Wales is being judged (by John Harrop) as I write this.

The results will be published in the December newsletter.

On a different subject, if you have been out and about around the shows this year and have seen a young person really doing a good job looking after, preparing and showing their Black Welsh Mountain sheep then please do nominate them for the Chris Hughes Memorial Trophy for the Best Young Stockperson.

The form and full information can be found in this newsletter.

It was good to get back to normal and hold our Annual Association Show & Sale once more this year.

It may have been wet but it did nothing to dampen the spirits; there was a good turnout and some excellent quality stock. For a full report see page 2.

That's it for now - hope you enjoy this edition!

Show & Sale 2008

Not surprisingly, the Annual Show & Sale day this year was predominantly wet, so although the show usually takes place outside it was necessary to move the classes inside.

The Secretary, Lesley Lewin, then took the microphone to present the Hayston Flock of the Year Trophy and the A S R Austen Trophy.

She also presented Gareth Davies with his Vice- President's badge at the same time.

Then Lyndon Trumper (the auctioneer) took over for the sale, the first since 2006.

President's Open Day - Home of the Hounsley Flock

On a gloomy but dry day in early August 35 members and friends met at Patricia Law's Hounsley Farm to see the Hounsley flock, learn a bit about showing and judging and enjoy some excellent hospitality.

Edward Williams

Edward Williams

It was quite a packed timetable! First of all, there were four shearling ewes tied up for us to practise judging, and a pen of ram lambs to try judging too.

This wasn't a competition, just a chance to have a go and learn a bit more.

There was also another pen containing two ram lambs for a "Guess the Combined Weight" competition. The weight turned out to be 63 kilos and Carmarthenshire member Eve Daff won this competition.

Following this, Talybont on Usk member Edward Williams and his father Glynn gave a demonstration on how to move horns.

Mike Hackling

Mike Hackling

Some horns can begin to point towards the head and cause problems as the ram matures and the Williams' demonstrated a way of carefully moving the lower part of the horn away from the head.

There was considerable interest in this part of the day and Edward and Glynn made the job look quite easy, and with no apparent distress to the ram lamb at all.

Mike Hackling was next and he gave a trimming demonstration which was much appreciated, particularly by some of the new members present who were entering shows for the first time this year.

Trish's neighbour, Robert Harding, was next and he gave a sheep dog training demonstration in the nearby paddock with three keen, but very different dogs:one fairly old and very reliable, one a bit too keen and one youngster who is just learning the job.

Lunch followed and after eating we had a go at some of the other competitions:

Trish Laws

Host Trish Laws seems to be suggesting a Keep Fit session. Glyn Williams and Chairman Will Workman seem pretty unimpressed at the idea!

  • "Guess the Judge" (photos of ten of our Association judges as babies or youngsters),
  • "Name the Breed" (a poster showing photos of most of the more common sheep breeds) and
  • "Stick the tail on the donkey" which was organised by some of Trish's grandchildren.

Sam Workman and Chris Garn both won the Guess the Judge Competition, Will Workman and Deidre McGregor both won the Guess the Breed Competition and Charlotte Merchant's sister won the tail-on-the-donkey.

Also in the barn was an art exhibition by two artists, Mary Griese (who will be well known to many of you with her popular stand at most of the major shows) and also our own member (and President Elect) Julia Patterson.

Part of the Hounsley Flock

Part of the Hounsley Flock

After lunch we walked around a few of the fields and paddocks and saw Trish's small Black Welsh Mountain flock, some of her Poll Dorsets and a few of Mike Hackling's Oxford Downs, all of which were much admired.

The day finished with a heavy horse demonstration by neighbour Robert Harding and a prize giving session and cup of tea back in the barn.

The Association is most indebted to Trish and husband Charlie, Trish's family and Mike Hackling too, for a well-organised and fun packed day.

There really was something for all the family, and something for experienced and inexperienced alike, so very well done!

Bluetongue update

The Bluetongue vaccine is now available to the majority of farmers in England and Wales.

However, the lack of new cases in England has apparently persuaded some farmers that it is not worth vaccinating, and others wonder if the vaccine is the right strain.

There are, indeed, many different strains of Bluetongue in Europe.

Italy, for example, has 6 different strains of the disease and Bluetongue strain 1 has caused 20 or so cases in the south of France.

In fact, France is suffering immensely at the moment, with at least 1,500 farms per week going down with Bluetongue 8.

The most common strain across Europe is Bluetongue 8, and this is the strain covered by the vaccine available here.

Bluetongue 8 cases are as close as Calais and have just re-emerged in Holland so we can't afford to be complacent just yet.

Hayston Flock of the Year Trophy

The seven qualifying shows this year were Royal Bath & West Show, Aberystwyth, Royal, Royal Welsh, Llanwrst, Gillingham & Shaftesbury, and Martletwy.

The winner is the same flock once more but we do have a new reserve:

Winner - Edward O Williams - 56 points
Reserve - Ray & Rita Wise - 27 points

Well done to Edward Williams and his family of Upper Wenallt Farm, Talybont on Usk, who is still the only member to have won the Hayston Award (which began in 2005).

What an achievement!

Next year's qualifying shows will be decided at the October Council Meeting so please look out for this information in the December Newsletter.

M & M Morgan Perpetual Trophy for the Best Young Handler

Runner up Rhodri Workman, Judge Glenda Hughes and winner Charlotte Morgan

L to R: Runner up Rhodri Workman, Judge Glenda Hughes and winner Charlotte Morgan

This year there was a good entry for the trophy of 10 members' relations and friends entered for our Young Handler Competition which takes place every year at the Royal Welsh Show after the completion of the sheep judging on the first day.

However, due to the very late running of our classes this year (due to the classes before us over-running and not due to our own judge I hasten to add!) by the time we were ready to start the Young Handler competition it was around 9 pm and for many of our participants it was simply too late in the day.

We did have five stalwarts ready and waiting to compete for the much prized M & M Morgan trophy, however, and they were Geraint Workman, Charlotte Morgan, Kieran Bowman, Rohdri Workman and Katie Garn.

The age range was eight to sixteen so our judge Glenda Hughes (mother of the three former trophy winners) had her work cut out.

In the end she awarded the prize to Charlotte Morgan (age 9) and in reserve Rodhri Workman (age 11).

Congratulations to both of them and well done to all those who managed to stay up and about for the event!

Chris Hughes Memorial Trophy for the Best Young Stockperson

Immediately prior to the recent Association Sale the Auctioneer introduced Ros Morgan, mother of our late member Chris Hughes.

She displayed a new trophy in memory of Chris, the Chris Hughes Young Stockperson of the Year Trophy.

An information sheet and form regarding this new competition was supplied with the catalogue.

If it passed you by, here is the information once more, and a form can be requested from the Secretary.

The Trophy will be awarded for good stockmanship demonstrated at any of the shows and sales throughout the year up to our own annual BWM Show & Sale in the autumn.

Any Association member can nominate a young person using the form below. The closing date for this year's nominations is Friday 10th October.

So, have you been impressed by the enthusiasm and ability of a young person showing (or helping to show) Black Welsh Mountain sheep around the shows this year?

Then this is your chance to nominate that person and encourage the next generation of Black Welsh Mountain breeders to continue with our wonderful breed.

Council will review all the nominations at their October Council meeting and a winner will be announced in the Christmas newsletter, and (if the young person is able to attend) the presentation will take place at the Show & Sale in 2009.

What age can a young person be?Any age up to and including 18 years (at the closing date for nominations)
What should my nomination be based on?Enthusiasm for presenting and showing Black Welsh Mountain sheep, keenness to do the job and love of the breed. This is not an award based on achievement in the show ring but a reward for commitment and enthusiasm.
Do they need to be BWMSBA members? No, they just need to love the breed and take an active role in showing and looking after them.
Do the shows have to be BWMSBA approved Shows? No

NSA concern at lack of knowledge on double tagging

National Sheep Association is seriously concerned that many sheep farmers are not fully aware of the new double tagging rules which came into force at the start of the year.

These regulations require sheep born in 2008 and not intended for slaughter under 12 months of age to be double tagged either by the age of 9 months if extensively reared or when they leave the holding of birth.

With the seasonal sales of breeding sheep just starting and the sales of gimmer ewe lambs just around the corner the first real tests of whether sheep farmers are correctly identifying their animals are now with the industry.

NSA Chief Executive Peter Morris said ‘No-one in the sheep industry is happy that we now have to double tag our sheep that have been born in 2008 and which are not intended for slaughter as lambs.

This adds cost and hassle to sheep producers at a busy time of the year and it is very difficult to understand what it achieves in terms of improving traceability.

However we are where we are and as such NSA believes it is right that everything possible is done to highlight to farmers what the new rules mean and what they might have to do differently from previous years in terms of identifying their sheep as they leave the holding of birth.

NSA would call on all sheep farmers to just take the time to make sure they have read the rules or contact industry organisations like NSA for more information.

Please don't do this as a last minute thing either as tag manufacturers cannot guarantee to get deliveries out at very short notice.
