Excellent Demand for Quality Black Welsh Mountain Sheep

The Annual Sale on behalf of the Black Welsh Mountain Sheep Breeders Association, held at Monmouthshire Livestock Market on 28th August, saw a tremendous trade for females with a slightly more selective demand for rams, resulting in good clearance rates and solid averages.

Topping the sale at 1800gns was a shearling ram from the Gaer flock of D & R Rowlands, Gaerwen. Gaer Blaidd, sired by Gaer Yankee Doodle and out of a home bred ewe, was purchased by M Jones, Ynys, Gwynedd. Next best at 1020gns was a ram lamb from EO Williams, Talybont On Usk. Wenallt Centenary, named for the BWMSBA’s 100- year celebrations, (postponed due to Covid-19) was sired by Wenallt Reagan out of a homebred ewe, went to the Llanover Estate, Abergavenny. The same vendor also sold home bred shearling ram, Wenallt Benny Hill for 1000gns to the same buyer. Other notable prices for males included SM Forsyth’s Ganol Charlie Boy, which was purchased by E Meredith, Pontsticill for 800gns and 700gns for Eryri Batman, bred by Gwawr Hughes, Pwllheli and sold to L Davies, Trostrey, Usk.

The females met an excellent trade topping at 730gns for a single shearling ewe from EO Williams. Sired by Wenallt Powerhouse, she now joins the recently established Heidio Ty Mawr flock of C Morgan-Gervais, Brecon. Another shearling ewe from EO Williams made 480gns selling to L Ballard, Chippenham.  From Gwawr Hughes’ Eryri flock, E Jones, Tiverton purchased a single shearling ewe sired by Ffridd Winner, for 600gns.

A total of five lambs were donated and sold in aid of Apollo 35 Ward at Bristol Children’s Hospital, where young BWMSBA member, Rory Ferguson, has been receiving treatment for Non Hodgkins Lymphoma. The sale of these animals raised over £2,000 and further generous donations were received from a number of members in support of this worthy cause.
