NEW BREED RECORD FOR BLACK WELSH MOUNTAIN
A well attended Annual Show and Sale for Black Welsh Mountain sheep at Abergavenny last week saw females in big demand and a new Breed Record. The new record of 1,420gns came half way through the sale when Ed Williams Upper Wenallt, Talybont On Usk, Brecon saw his recently crowned Sire of the Year, Wenallt Legend sell to fellow breeders K. & K. Bowman, Penrhiwllwythau, Abercave, Swansea Valley. This was the first time that the Sire of the Year Competition had been run and was awarded to the Ram gaining most points at the shows throughout the summer. The Ted Williams Memorial Trophy was presented by the Williams family, Garth Uchaf, Pentyrch, Cardiff in memory of their son Ted who was an active member and council member of the Association and sadly died last year. The trophy was presented by his son Ben.
E.O. Williams also took top price in the female section, when his pre sale Female Champion Pair, by the homebred Wenallt Farmer, made 250gns to M Harris, Dukes Fm, Llanishen, Chepstow, only to be surpassed by his other pair of shearling ewes when they reached the day’s top of 300gns each for this pair by another home bred sire, Wenallt Jose Wales. This time the buyer was M Jones, Bron Byrfe, Llandewi Brefi, Tregaron, Cerdigion.
Judge, Christopher Garn’s reserve pair followed the judging trend and made the next highest bid of 220gns for Ben Williams, Garth Uchaf, Pentyrch, Cardiff when he sold his pair of ewe lambs by Wenallt John Wayne to the Association Chairman, Dyfed Rowlands, Isallt, Gaerwen, Anglesey. This was then equalled by the third prize pen from Mr. & Mrs R. Wise, Popes Farm, Murrell Hill Lane, Bracknell, Berks when their pair by Hounsley Kasper also sold for 220gns to Messrs Harris from Chepstow.
While the ram lambs were a steadier trade, there was an excellent clearance for shearling rams in particular and following the breed record several other lots made good prices. These were led by Hounsley Laser judged to be the Male Champion by Judge Julia Patterson and exhibited by Patricia Laws, Hounsley Farm, Winford, Bristol. This shearling ram by Hounsley Kilroy had numerous breed Championships to his name, most notably this year’s Royal Welsh and The Smallholders Show. He sold to Andrew James, Barons Court, Llangadog, Carmarthen for 780gns, who went on to lead the ram lamb sale with his Pengelly Fergus son, Barons Court Master who sold To L Jones, Penlan Fm, Painscastle, Hay On Wye for 410gns. Will Workman, Fedw Farm, Trecastle, Brecon sold Fedw Llew Ddu by his Muzzy Hill Cellan for 580gns to Messrs Kimberly & Dawson, Pengwern, Blaenau Ffestiniog and Dyfed Rowlands recouped some of his earlier purchase when he sold Gaer Kindness, by his homebred stock ram Gaer Hebog, to Mark Evans, Bryn Ysgallog, Burry Green, Gower for 520gns.
